General Questions

Question: How can Net-It Central help my organization?

Net-It Central provides significant cost-savings by enabling visual non-editable access to files in different formats without requiring the native authoring software on every desktop, without requiring IT involvement to post new content to the intranet each time. Time is saved in both a process simplification in preparing content for general enterprise distribution and in looking for files of interest across the organization.

Question: What's unique about Net-It Central?

Net-It Central is simple.   Unlike complex document management systems or other web based publishing solutions, Net-It Central can be deployed in less than a day.  It's easy to use.   Drag and drop files into monitored folders and Net-It Central does the rest.  Alternatively web browse to a folder of interest and use contribute to add document files with metadata.  Document files are automatically published and indexed for document users to find and access using a web browser.  Net-It Central is very efficient on large paged documents since it can deliver search results down to the specific pages of interest and deliver just those pages to be viewed.   Net-It Central is not licensed on a per user basis - so it is a less costly solution over most document management solutions for distributing "released" documents to the entire organization for  intranet / extranet access.

Question: How does Net-It Central compare to document management systems?

Unlike complex document management systems or other web based publishing solutions, Net-It Central can be deployed in less than a day.  Net-It Central does not require a database, nor does it provide check in/check out or version management.   Content consumers in general do not require this complexity in accessing a document.  A document management system can be used to manage documents under revision and approval.  But once approved the release process can deposit these documents into a "release" folder and Net-It Central can do the rest to make the most current version of the documents available for searchable intranet/extranet access.   For many departments and smaller organizations, document management solutions are costly, expensive to deploy and administer, and involve more complexity that is really required for the majority of the users that just need access to current documents (like policy and procedures, operation manuals, etc).  Most users don't need access to previous versions, just the current version.  Most users don't check in new documents (as content consumers).  Most users just need to find the documents then need and view them quickly online.   That is what Net-It Central is about.   Net-It Central can compliment existing document management solutions and reduce the overall system price by giving the right functionality and complexity to the right users.

Question: How much training is required to use Net-It Central?

None. Net-It Central's intuitive and simple interface makes it possible to use immediately with no special training.    Once sites and monitored folders are established, users use the same document authoring tools they are familiar with and simply save files that are ready for general release to established folders.  It's seamless.

Question: Can Net-It Central be used with other software?



Absolutely. Net-It Central is integrated with several Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and Project Management/Collaboration offerings, or you can integrate Net-It Central to your own intranet/extranet deployment using the SDK interface and included examples.

Question: How is Net-It Central licensed and what does it cost?

Net-It Central is licensed on a server basis with unlimited users allowable.  The licensing is designed for pilot, departmental and enterprise class deployments. The difference between each is the number documents that can be published to a document site and how many document sites can be created. Question: What navigation and display tools does Net-It Central offer?

Net-It offers dynamic zoom, pan and magnifier view controls; visual compare of two files showing differences; rotate and mirror; layer control; scale to gray (for black and white raster), page thumbnails, and geometry snap measurement tools.

Question: Why is Net-It easier to use than competitive offerings?

Net-It's familiar Windows interface is uncluttered, with an emphasis on navigation so you can quickly find what you need whether you are viewing a document, image or CAD drawing. Documents load zoomed to width for easy reading. Drawings load in Fit All view, ready for you to select the initial zoom area. The combination Zoom/Pan tool lets the user get to any location fast. Changemarks make stepping through annotations/markups foolproof, so reviewing is a snap. Our print dialog shows a detailed preview of the page, including margin lines so there are no surprises.

Question: Can Net-It Central edit document/drawing files?

No. Net-It Central does not allow for any editing of the original file.

Question: Can users edit markups created by others?

Users cannot edit another user's annotations. Each annotation entity is marked with the creator's username, date and time. Users with sufficient permission can consolidate all markups, even from other users, for a workflow process.

Question: What is secure CSF and Visual Rights?

Visual Rights allow you to control how your documents can be used when sent to suppliers, customers or partners. Net-It allows document, image and CAD files to be published into an accurate, encrypted, secure Content Sealed Format (CSF) that embeds persistent Visual Rights like print, copy, measure, markup and analyze rights and the ability to expire the file on a certain date. You can also add watermarks and banners and include annotations. A CSF file can be viewed with Visual Rights control using our free Net-It Reader. Unlike PDF, a secure CSF file is not an open format and cannot be edited by third party software.

Question: Can a user capture a copy of the file they are viewing?

No. Net-It Central does not send your original documents files to any part of the client disk. The Net-It Server processes your drawing and image files behind the firewall and delivers compressed page by page renditions of the documents through the HTTP/HTTPs server.   Optional client side processing for opening files is available for PDF and TIFF and when enabled, file information is securely passed for only memory processing.

Question: What platforms does Net-It Central support?

The Net-It Central client supports Windows platforms. Net-It Central can be configured to be “serverless” for imaging deployments (viewing just PDF and TIFF), allowing any server platform configuration (Unix, Linux or Windows). The Net-It Central transaction server is implemented in .NET (Windows Server) or as a Java Servlet (Unix or Windows with a JVM). For viewing of all supported file formats, Net-It Central uses a publishing server that processes files into content rich viewable pages deliverable to the client. This behind-the-firewall publisher requires a Windows Server to provide the highest level of accuracy in rendering Office Documents for TrueType fonts, OLE objects, Hyperlinks, etc.

Question: What is the setup and installation procedure?

Setup and installation involve installing (if necessary) and configuring a Web server (Tomcat is provided with Net-It), installing and configuring the Net-It Server and installing the Net-It Client on your Web Server and configuring it. The client is Web-delivered to the end user's machine and does not require manual installation (for version 5.0, users without the Java 2 JVM will be prompted to run that install, which is provided automatically).

Question: Is Net-It Central implemented in Java, .NET or ActiveX?

Net-It Central has two client options: Java Applet or ActiveX.   There are two server options: Java Servlet or .NET.

Question: How can the client be installed on Restricted User desktops?

The Net-ItClientInstall.bat script provides an alternative method to the CAB download for installing the Net-It client control. If the user is set up as a Restricted User as opposed to a Standard User, this script will register the necessary components to allow a Restricted User to run.
