PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Net-It® Central 7.0 software from Informative Graphics Corporation turns your intranet into a document sharing platform for your entire organization, your business partners, and your customers. Net-It Central automatically collects, publishes, and maintains engineering desktop documents as linked collections of "intranet documents" that look exactly like the originals and can be used immediately in any standard browser without plug-ins.

Deliver critical documents to the right people inside and outside your organization. Net-It Central is a complete, lightweight portal solution for customers seeking out-of-the-box deployment to share and collaborate architectural, manufacturing design content or office documents. Take full advantage of the Net-It Central intranet publishing system by extending your publishing team with the browser-based Contributor. No HTML conversion or webmaster is required and authors can contribute directly to the site - any time and from anywhere. Suppliers and outside contributors can access and collaborate without having to purchase, download or install any software. With customizable site templates, an open programming API, and CentralTools connectors for integrating with other applications, you can fully customize your file sharing solution.

WHAT'S NEW

New features in this release:

  • Net-It Central 7.0 is a Unicode compiled application and uses MFC VS. 7.1 run time libraries.

  • Net-It Central 7.0 Central Tools are compiled with MFC VS. 7.1. Due to MFC 7.1 interface changes, all third party Central Tools need to be updated and recompiled in VS 7.1. See the Central Tools manual included in your installation for details.

  • Enhanced and updated user interface includes new toolbar icons and menu structure.

  • Option changes and enhancements to the Site Properties Dialog tabs.

  • Net-It Central 7.0 includes a new enhanced ActiveX Brava viewer with greater speed, fidelity, and features. The Java Brava Viewer is no longer part of Net-It Central.

  • Markups and Annotations are no longer supported.

  • Improved Black Ice printer drivers.

  • Improvements to link extraction.

  • Improvements in plug-ins.

  • "I Have Read This" feature added to the default installation. This feature was previously only available as a separate download.

  • Support for the use of FlashPaper to convert documents to flash format instead of the native internal flash driver. FlashPaper must be purchased separately to use this option.

  • A new registry entry "NoRtfLinks" is added to bypass extracting links from RTF files.

  • Office 2K/XP HTML Central Tool is now enabled by default. Users can set this option through the Publishing tab of a Net-It Central Site's Properties dialog.

UPGRADING FROM AN EARLIER VERSION

  • Net-It Central 7.0 only supports the Brava ActiveX Viewer. Users upgrading from earlier versions of Net-It Central are forced to re-build all HTML pages when an existing site is built for the firs time with Net-It Central 7.0.

  • Net-It Central 7.0 Central Tools are compiled with MFC VS. 7.1. Due to MFC 7.1 interface changes, all third party Central Tools need to be updated and recompiled in VS 7.1. See the Central Tools manual included in your installation for details.

  • By design, uninstalling Net-It Central 7.0 does not remove your existing Templates or CSS (style sheets) folders. Installing Net-It Central 7.0 will not overwrite the files in the existing Template 3.5 folder (from previous versions of Net-It Central), but reinstalling Net-It Central 7.0 will overwrite anything contained in existing Template 6.0 and *.css folders with the new template and style sheet files if no action is taken to preserve the existing files. If you would like to keep your modified templates and style sheets, you can either make back up copies of, or rename these top level directories before reinstalling (e.g., CustomTemplates and CustomCSS).  After reinstalling, you can copy any custom files that you want to use from your renamed or backup folders to the new Templates 6.0 and *.css folders.

  • If you customized earlier Net-It Central templates and wish to include 7.0 features, add your modifications to the templates shipped with Net-It Central 7.0.

  • After backing up any files you wish to keep, you must uninstall your previous version of Net-It Central through your Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs utility before you will be able to install Net-It Central 7.0.

  • Your old Net-It Central project files can be opened by Net-It Central 7.0, but once opened with 7.0, they will not be able to be read by an earlier version of Net-It Central.

  • Before running Net-It Central 7.0, make a backup copy of your .ncp project files in case you choose to go back to a previous Net-It Central version.  Net-It Central will upgrade the .ncp files so they can no longer be read by an earlier Net-It Central version.  It is recommended that you perform a test build to a non-production site to verify the full site rebuild works properly before deleting the older version .ncp file.

  • Users upgrading from versions lower than Net-It Central 6.0 may experience difficulty viewing documents in the ActiveX viewer due to incorrect values in the Document Site URL field of the Locations tab. Net-It Central 6.0 and higher use the variable {NI_File.AbsolutePath} in the JavaScripts.js file for the ActiveX viewer. If the Document Site URL is specified but incorrect, the ActiveX viewer will fail to load documents. Users upgrading their sites should insure that the Document Site URL field is empty, or has a valid file URL or HTTP URL for the published site.

USAGE TIPS

    APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY and WORKAROUNDS

Several workarounds are included in your Net-It central installation directory that help with a variety of issues regarding the interaction between Net-It Central and third party applications that can not be solved by modification of Net-It Central. Below explains these workarounds as well as other third party software compatibility issues.

    • Windows XP, Service Pack 2: Please refer to the XPSP2_UserNotes.htm document for specific issues and workarounds if you are running Net-It Central on a Windows XP SP2 system.

    • The publishing server (running either or both Net-It Central or the Job Processor) should NOT have any other applications or users running on it (aside from the Net-It Central publishing processes) as termination of these outside processes can result.

    • Microsoft Office applications may display dialogs that interfere with the Net-It Central build progress. To avoid these problems, make sure to turn off the Office Assistants, uncheck "Display Alerts" in the Office Assistant options dialog.

    • Net-It Central's new Contributor does not support Netscape version 6.0 or higher.

    • If you want Net-It Central to support a foreign language Office document so the characters of a foreign language are rendered correctly:

      • Ensure that English is selected as your primary language

      • From your Windows Start menu, go to Programs | Microsoft Office Tools | Microsoft Office Language Settings

      • Select the language that you want supported on your Net-It Central build server

    • HTML conversion in Office 2000/XP is supported for Word, Excel and PowerPoint only.

    • Access 2000 databases need to be opened manually in Access and updated before they will convert with Net-It Central.

    • In Word 97, if the Show All (non-printing characters) feature is turned on, hyperlinks will not be extracted correctly. Open the Options dialog in the Tools menu and ensure that the All checkbox on the View tab is unchecked.

    • The Microsoft Find Fast component of Microsoft Office interferes with the operation of Net-It Central. Disable or remove this component from your Net-It Central machine.

    • Net-It Central obeys the "font smoothing" setting in the Plus! tab of the Display control panel when converting text to GIFs. If the text appears over a colored background, the text will have a fringe of white pixels. To avoid this problem, turn off font smoothing while building your Web site.

    • If using Terminal Services on Windows Windows 2000, Net-It Central must be installed on the console machine with Terminal Services running to install the appropriate Black Ice  printer driver.  You cannot install Net-It Central on a machine running Terminal Services from a Terminal Services session.  If Terminal Services is installed on the server running Net-It Central, and you wish to uninstall the product, you must also manually uninstall the Black Ice printer driver through the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs dialog. This can be done either before or after uninstalling Net-It Central.

    • Anti-Virus software: Publishing through DLAutoPublish with the Black Ice EMF print driver may be affected if an Anti-Virus software is running. Timeout values are set in the Black Ice driver and printing/conversion can fail if the Anti Virus is running and checks the print spooler and EMF files. To resolve this issue, either turn off the Anti Virus software on the build machine, or filter out spooler, temp, and other conversion related output folders and files in the Anti-Virus checker.

    • Microsoft Excel: A workaround macro is available called OneJob.xla that can be used with products from Informative Graphics to prevent a problem that can occur when publishing Excel files that contain more than one Worksheet. If Worksheets contained in one Excel file have differing resolution quality settings, Excel will start more than one print job, resulting in incomplete published documents. This effect is a know Excel issue and is documented further in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;168563

The workaround macro sets the resolution of each Worksheet to 600 dpi every time before printing.

          To us the macro:

      1. Copy OneJob.xla from your Net-It Central directory \Workarounds folder and paste it into your Excel auto start folder (usually called XLStart and is located in your Excel application directory within the Microsoft Office directory).  An example path would be: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\XLStart. If you use a customized location, copy the macro to that location.
      2. After you have copied the macro into this folder a toolbar named "IGC Workaround" is created when Excel is started. The macro works automatically and the single button on the toolbar shows a short explanation about the Workaround when moused over. It is only present to show that the macro is active and is deleted again every time you close Excel.
      3. If you choose to deactivate the macro, simply delete the OneJob.xla file from your XLStart directory.

    • Microsoft Excel: Another workaround tool is available in the \Workarounds directory, similar to OneJob.xla, called DPI Tools.xls. This tool can be used if you are not able to run the Add-in when using the Excel Viewer for conversion. This tool lets you select a folder that contains Excel files and then opens each selected file and sets the PrintQuality to 600 dpi for each Worksheet. No install required, simply open the file DPI Tools.xls.

    • Microsoft Excel: Also available in the \Workarounds directory, is a tool called PageBreakVeiw.xla. Use this macro for multi-page Excel worksheets only while using Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 machines. This macro necessitates repagination of the document by Print Preview to align page breaks within the document.

       To us the macro:

      1. Copy PageBreakView.xla from your Net-It Central directory \Workarounds folder and paste it into your Excel auto start folder (usually called XLStart and is located in your Excel application directory within the Microsoft Office directory).  An example path would be: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\XLStart. If you use a customized location, copy the macro to that location.
      2. If you choose to deactivate the macro, simply delete the PageBreakView.xla file from your XLStart directory.

    • Microsoft Excel: If Excel files republish on every build. Net-It Central checks the CRC's of files to determine if they have changed and therefore need to be republished. A macro is available called RemovePersonalInfo.xla that enables the "Remove personal information from file properties on save" option. When this option is disabled (on the Security tab of the Options dialog), this causes Excel files to be changed when opened and therefore republished. To use the macro:

      • Copy the file RemovePersonalInfo.xla into your Excel startup folder  (XLStart) to force the macro to load each time Excel starts up. An example path would be: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\XLStart. If you use a customized location, copy the macro to that location.

      • To uninstall the macro, simply delete it from your XLStart directory.

    • Microsoft Excel: If you receive a DDE connection failure from DLAutoPublish while publishing an Excel document (can't open an Excel object from another program), do the following:

      • In Excel from the Tools menu, select Options

      • From the General tab, clear the check box for "Ignore other applications". If this option is selected, Excel ignores requests from programs that link to Excel data by means of DDE rather than OLE.

    • Microsoft Excel: Processing workbooks that include all worksheets
In order for Net-It Central to be able to process all worksheets of a workbook, two registry entries must be modified.
      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\printto\ddeexec
      Should be modified from:
      [open("%1")][print(1,,,,,,,,,,,2,"%2")][close()]
      to
      [open("%1")][print(1,,,,,,,,,,,3,"%2")][close()]
      and
      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\printto\ddeexec\ifexec
      Should be modified from:
      [open("%1")][print(1,,,,,,,,,,,2,"%2")][quit()]
      to
      [open("%1")][print(1,,,,,,,,,,,3,"%2")][quit()]

    • Microsoft PowerPoint: When using certain versions of the third party virtual printer Black Ice EMF, some PowerPoint versions (such as PowerPoint XP) automatically set the Grayscale option in the printer dialog each time a document is printed. An Add-in called PrintColor.ppa is available that, when active, sets the option to Color each time a document is printed. To install the Add-in, open PowerPoint and click Tools, then Add-Ins. Click the Add New button and browse to the location of PrintColor.ppa in your installed Net-It Central/Workarounds folder. Select it and click OK. The Add-in is now active. In this dialog, you can also Unload and Load the Add-in if you need to deactivate it regularly.

    • Microsoft PowerPoint: When using certain versions of the third party virtual printer Black Ice EMF, some PowerPoint slides are clipped at the edges. An Add-in called FitToPage.ppa is available that, when active, sets the Fit To Page option each time a document is printed. To install the Add-in, open PowerPoint and click Tools, then Add-Ins. Click the Add New button and browse to the location of FitToPage.ppa in your installed Net-It Central/Workarounds folder. Select it and click OK. The Add-in is now active. In this dialog, you can also Unload and Load the Add-in if you need to deactivate it regularly.

    • Windows 2003 Server: In order to install Net-It Central on a Windows 2003 Server, an adjustment to a printer setting is necessary in order to allow the Black Ice Printer to install:

      1. From the Start menu, choose Run and enter "gpedit.msc" in the Open input field.

      2. The Group Policy Object Editor dialog box displays. Under Computer Configuration, select Administrative Templates >> Printers

      3. The Printer setting "Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode drivers" needs to be changed to a state of Disabled. Double click the setting to disable it.

  • Windows 2003 Server: If "The Page Cannot be Displayed" error results when you try to access a Net-It Central site and you may find that when using Windows 2003, the Windows Firewall Settings are blocking access to ports used by the Web Server and FTP server. Exceptions must be added to the Windows Firewall Settings to allow access to Net-It Central sites. To do this:

    1. From the Windows Control Panel, select Network Connections -->Local Area Connection.

    2. Click the Properties button of the Connection Status Dialog box.

    3. Click the Advanced tab and then the Settings button to view the Windows Firewall settings form.

    4. Click the Exceptions tab and then click Add Port.

    5. Add ports for HTTP Port Number 80, FTP Upload Port Number 21, and HTTPS if necessary.

  • Windows 2003 Server with IIS 6.0: Starting with Internet Information Services 6.0 Microsoft changed the way it handles MIME types by default and follows the MIME type standard more closely now. It requires that the web server identifies every document's MIME type as it is being served over http. This makes it necessary to register IGC's proprietary file formats needed to view a web site generated by NIC.

These formats include:

.dl Document or drawing page converted to the CDL format
.fd Font data files needed to render text in CDL documents
.icr IGC Color Raster file type for embedded raster images in CDL documents
.ig4 IGC Group 4 file type for monochrome raster images (originally g4) embedded in CDL documents
.irl IGC Run Length file type for monochrome raster images embedded in CDL documents
.idx text index generated by CDL for enabling site searching
.xdl XML index file to load the complete CDL document
.zdl compressed .dl file

Register these formats for the MIME type "application/brava-x" with the following procedure:

  1. Start your IIS Console via the Control Panel and Administrative Tools.

  2. Right-click on the root website and choose Properties.

  3. Click the HTTP Headers tab, then the File Types... button.

  4. In the File Types dialog, click the New Type... button.

  5. Enter the extension and "application/brava-x" as the Content Type.

  6. Hit OK to add the new type to the list.

  7. Repeat steps 4-6 for all file types listed.

  8. Click OK to close out the dialogs. The website should now be able to view CDL documents

If you want to enable the download of original documents and drawings that are not standard MIME Types such as .dwg or .906, you will need to add these to the list too.

    BROWSER  SETTINGS

    • If you are viewing a site while it is being rebuilt, you may need to clear the browser caches to correctly view the new version of the site.
    • Minimum Browser Settings for Viewing a Net-It Central Site:

To enable viewing of Net-It Central generated sites, you may need to set your browser security setting to a minimum level that allows certain Net-It Central technologies to function. There are two ways to achieve this. The easiest is to add the Net-It Central site to the list of Trusted Sites of your Internet browser. For IE, follow the steps below:

      1. Click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options
      2. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab
      3. In the Security tab, click the Trusted Sites icon and then the Sites... button
      4. Type in the main URL for the site you are trying to view, for example: http://www.infograph.com
      5. Click the Add button to add the site to the list.
      6. Close all open dialogs by clicking OK. The site should now view correctly in IE.

The second option is to enable only the needed technologies without marking the entire site as trusted. Based on the Default Security Level as "High" in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

      1. Click on the Tools menu and choose Internet Options.
      2. In the Internet Options dialog box,  click the Security tab.
      3. In the Security tab, click the Internet icon. If the web site is on your Intranet, click the Local Intranet icon instead.
      4. Click on the Custom Level... button.
      5. In the Security Settings option list, enable the following options:
        • "Run components signed with Authenticode"
        • "Download signed ActiveX controls"
        • "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins"
        • "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting"
        • "File download"
        • "Active scripting"
      6. Click the OK buttons to close the settings dialogs. Restarting IE is not necessary.

The "Download signed ActiveX controls" option is only needed for the first visit to the site. If so desired, it can be disabled again after the viewer has automatically installed on the first view of a document on the site. The "File download" option only needs to be enabled, if the web site offers downloading of original documents. (This is usually indicated by a small hard drive icon next to document link in table of contents.)

    CENTRAL TOOLS

    • In Chapter 2 of the Creating CentralTools Modules manual, step 5 of the Modifying the sample Central Tool section contains a NOTE that explains debugging: "...copy the PropertyManager_XD.dll into your Central Tools folder". In addition to copying this DLL, you will also need to copy the Contributor_XD.dll to get the debug version of the Contributor Central Tool and the NICOfficeToHTML_XD.dll to get the debug version of the Office 2000 HTML Central Tool.

    • Net-It Central 7.0 implements a new common category GUID for the Central Tool interface and will plug-in only the dll’s that you have registered to this new GUID. If you are transitioning MFC VS 4.2 to MFC VS 7.1, you will need to incorporate the changes from the new sample files CategoryManager.h and CategoryManager.cpp. Copy and paste the changes into your CentralTools common category implementations.

    • In order for the CentralTool UI to work with Net-It Central 7.0, the third party central tools must be recompiled as Unicode when recompiling with MFC-VS 7.1. To do this, ensure the Unicode option is enabled in the Project - Configuration Properties\General\Character Set.

    • You will need to re-register the CentralTool DLL file if you are upgrading Net-It Central from a previous version prior to 7.0. Earlier versions of the CentralTools module used MFC version 4.2 where MFC version 7.1 is used in Net-It Central 7.0 and higher. CentralTools COM interface is declared with MFC objects which forces all Central Tool DLL’s to build with the same version of MFC libraries that Net-It Central is built with.

      CONTRIBUTOR
    • The Contributor module of Net-It Central is an Active X control that functions in the end-user's browser.

    • The Contributor does not support Netscape Navigator versions 6.0 and higher. If the browser is Netscape Navigator 4.7, a plug-in called the Portability Container (portcont.exe) must be installed on the end-user's system. The Net-It Central templates include the tags necessary to prompt the first-time user about the plug-in and will guide the user clearly through its installation. Once installed, and Navigator is restarted, the Contributor will work in Navigator.

    • To ensure that all intranet site end-users can use the Contributor, it is recommended to use a shared folder with a UNC address as your document source. e.g., \\Myserver\Shared\MyFolder versus F:\MyFolder, where F: is mapped to \\Myserver\Shared. A mapped drive letter drive will only work if all end-users have an identical mapping to the source.

    • Contributor was rewritten for Net-It Central 5.5. Users will get an update message the first time they try to contribute to a Net-It Central 5.5 or higher version site. This new version of Contributor  may produce unexpected results when used with sites created with DrawBridge Central. It is highly recommended that only Net-It Central be used to build all sites accessed throughout an organization. If an environment exists where there are different versions running (i.e., Net-It Central 5.0) unexpected results can occur with the Contributor Wizard.

    • Shortcuts to documents may be submitted using Contributor, however shortcuts to folders cannot be submitted.

    • End users can traverse through folder shortcuts using Contributor, if the site only uses file system submittal. The user does need sufficient privileges to access the source folder.

    • When metadata is entered in the Contributor for a document, Net-It Central generates a *.csi file when the site is built to store that information locally along with the source file. It can be useful to keep a document's *.csi file if you plan to contribute the file more than once, eliminating the task of having to re-enter the same metadata each time.

    CUSTOM DOCUMENT INFORMATION FIELDS

    • Net-It Central allows the site administrator to define custom Document Information for use with Contributor.

    • Custom Document Information fields are defined within the file Docinfo.txt. This file is located in the Net-It Central folder. Metadata fieldnames can only contain letters and digits (no spaces or special characters). Field descriptions can contain any character except a quotation mark.

    • The same custom Document Information fields also need to be added to each instance of the Metasrch.htm file and each instance of the Info.htm file in your template. As always, back up the original template before making any modifications.

    • If you're using IIS 4.0 for your search engine, the custom Document Information fields need to be added to the [NAMES] section of the ni_search.idq file.

    • The Docinfo.txt file will get overwritten if you reinstall Net-It Central. To preserve your changes, save a backup of this file before uninstalling or reinstalling Net-It Central 7.0.

    • The custom Document Information fields need to be added to the Document Information field list in the searchpg.htm file to show up in the dropdown list for this page.

    GENERAL

    • If you wish to rebuild an entire site, you can hold down the Ctrl key while choosing Build "site name" from the Build menu.

    • The HTML templates can be configured to download and install the document viewer one time rather than once per browser session. This speeds up the viewing of files on future browser sessions. This capability is included in the Net-It Central 7.0 templates.

    • A template that has a style.css file in the root of the template will not have the .css file overwritten by Net-It Central during the template build process.  Thus, users can either create their own custom style sheets and select them in the GUI or simply have a style.css file in the template root so the template always uses a specific style sheet.

    • The Net-It Central build machine should not have any other processes running besides Net-It Central. To automate the build process and prevent the need for manual input during the build process, Net-It Central is configured to accept the default of any message dialogs that appear during the conversion process.

    • On some Microsoft Office applications, a prompt might appear asking if you would like to disable macros. If during the conversion process Net-It Central accepts a default that is set to Yes. Macros will be disabled (including Acrobat PDFMaker). You can enable any macros that have been disabled through the applications Help-> About Microsoft menu. Select the Disabled Items button, select the item in the list to enable, and click Enable.

    HYPERLINKS

    • Net-It Central will detect internet locations (e.g. http://www.net-it.com) in the text of converted documents and turn them into links.

    • Net-It Central has extended support for hyperlinks, bookmarks, and file references created in Microsoft Word 97 or later, Visio 5.0, Microsoft Excel, and Power Point.

    • If you convert a Word 95 document to a later version of Word, you must manually update the Table of Contents in order for the Table of Contents links to work. If the links work in the later version of Word, they will also work in Net-It Central.
Note: Extended support for hyperlinks created in Microsoft Word applies only to Word hyperlinks associated with text (e.g. hyperlinks associated with graphics objects are not supported). When converting a bookmark that links to another document, the link will go to the first page of that document.

    • Internet locations detected in text will not be converted to hyperlinks if the string contains shadowed style changes, rotated text, or if the string falls across more than one line.

    • A BravaXClient parameter "FireEventOnBookmarkEntitySelected" has been added. User can set this parameter in dlxview.htm file for the selected Site template. If set to TRUE, the viewer control will fire an event when a bookmark entity is clicked. The event handler opens the document and the referenced bookmark page in a new browser window. If set to FALSE, the control will change the page to the target page in the same browser window. It is set to FALSE by default.

    DLAutoPublish API

    • The DLAutoPublish object in Net-It Central is AutoPublish.

    • DLAutoPublish can only process one HTML file per document. The default sample API template DocTemplate.htm is implemented for use with the Brava! Viewer.

CDL CONVERSION

  • Embedded images in office documents converted to CDL have a maximum resolution of 600 dpi. You can adjust the MaxRasterDPI setting in the myrdrv.ini file to lower the resolution. You must edit this value if you require an image resolution greater than 600 dpi. Please see the myrdrv_userguide.rtf  contained in your Net-It Central installation for detailed information about driver settings.

  • If publishing on a Windows 2003 Server with IIS 6.0, you will need to set MIME types for proprietary formats. See Workarounds section of this document.

FLASH CONVERSION

  • To view flash files converted with Net-It Central, the end user must have Macromedia Flash Player version 6 or higher installed with his browser.

  • If you are converting PDF files to Flash we recommend using Adobe Reader 6.0 on the NIC Server for the conversion process.

  • The registry entry for FlashPaper printer driver interface is, "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Informative Graphics Corp.\IGCFlashPaperPublish".

By default, the registry key "\DocProps\UseFlashPaperPrinter" is set to 1 and documents will convert to flash using FlashPaper printer driver. To convert using native Flash printer driver, user has to set "\DocProps\UseFlashPaperPrinter" to 0.

    PDF CONVERSION

    • Two-way PDF conversion is available with Net-It Central. You can convert PDF documents to CDL or Flash files - and you can convert desktop documents to PDF files.

    • To view PDF files published with Net-It Central, the end user must have Acrobat Reader installed on his machine. (Note: PDF files published as CDL do not need Acrobat installed on the end-user machine and will launch in the Brava! ActiveX viewer.)

    • If you are converting PDF files to Flash we recommend using Adobe Reader 6.0 on the NIC Server for the conversion process.

    • If a PDF file is password-protected, it will not be converted.

    • Some non-Adobe applications create invalid PDF files that Net-It Central cannot convert. Use Adobe Exchange to open and re-save them in a valid format.

    • Some characters may be converted to bitmaps during PDF to CDL conversion. These characters will not be available in the Copy Text dialog when viewing the converted document in the document Viewer.

    • A new registry setting for the PDF converter is available for multilingual support. With this registry setting, you can convert multilingual documents (Kanji documents on English systems with Japanese language support installed). If you choose to use this setting, hyperlinks text extraction is disabled for the converted document.

    • If the PDF rendering that comes with Net-It Central does not convert the PDF document to CDL correctly, and if you have Adobe Acrobat, you can use Acrobat as the conversion tool for PDF to CDL. If you are using Acrobat for viewing and printing PDF files and the outcome is blank, this is corrected by disabling the registry setting for PDF to CDL conversion (through IGC drivers) and then changing the Acrobat document jDocPrint action as follows:

      1) To disable the registry setting:

      • Open your registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Net-It Software Corp.\Net-It Central\Extensions\PDF

      •  Edit the REG_SZ value data to 0 if this registry key exists.

      2) To change the jDocPrint action:

      1. From a Window's Explorer window, select Tools-->Folder Options

      2. From the File Types tab, select "PDF" from the Extension list

      3. Click Advanced and select "jDocPrint" from the Action list

      4. Click Edit to summon the "Editing Action for Type:" dialog box

      5. In the "Application used to perform Action" field, browse to the location of Acrobat.exe

      6. Edit the command line to include the following: /p /h "%1"
        Example: "D:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe" /p /h "%1"

    BLACK ICE EMF PRINT DRIVER

    • If you experience problems publishing non-native documents with Net-It Central, verify that the temporary output directory for the published files points to a drive that has at least 2GB of free space. To do this:

      1. From your Window's Printers and Faxes panel, right click on  Black Ice EMF and select Properties.

      2. From the General tab of the Properties dialog, select Printing Preferences.

      3. From the Filename Generation tab, check the path entered in the Output Directory field. Make sure there is at least 2GB of free space in the directory indicated.

      4. From the Advanced tab of the Properties dialog, select Printing Defaults.

      5. From the Filename Generation tab, check the path entered in the Output Directory field. Make sure there is at least 2GB of free space in the directory indicated.

In addition, the drives containing the system spool folder (typically C:\WINDOWS\System32\Spool) and the EMF file output directory (from the Locations tab of the Site Properties dialog) should have 2GB of free space available.

    • Additional information and settings pertaining to the print driver component (Black Ice EMF) that is part of the Signet Print Publisher can be found in <Signet Print Publisher Installation Directory>/Manual/PRTDRV_NT.doc

    • Black Ice is the component that DLAutoPublish uses to convert Office types of formats to CDL. If you experience any problems converting these types of files, follow the procedure outlined below to use the Black Ice Message Capture tool. This tool allows you to determine the point where the problem is occurring and if all pages of a document are being converted to EMF successfully:

      1. The Black Ice Message Capture program allows you to view the messages sent by the print driver as it prints the contents of a file. It will return information on the Start of Document, Start and End of each Page, and End of Document. If you don't receive an End of Document notification, there is a problem with the entire document not being successfully converted by Black Ice. The Message Capture program is located under the Black Ice Software installation folder (e.g., C:\Program Files\Black Ice Software, Inc\Black Ice EMF Printer Driver\MessageCaptureSample).

      2. In the MessageCaptureSample directory, click to launch MessageCaptureSample.exe.

      3. Press Clear at the top of the dialog box to clear the initialization message.

      4. Open the document you want to test for conversion and Print it using the Black Ice EMF as your chosen printer.

      5. Review the MessageCaptureSample dialog. You should see the messages that were captured and whether the document printed successfully, or encountered errors.

    • Issue -After processing 400+ office documents Net It Central fails to publish any more on Windows 2000 or 2003 machines. (You may receive error code -23, insert file error.) When the task manager is opened and handles are viewed for the dlautopublish.exe process and print spooler.exe (Win 2000) or spoolsv.exe (Win 2003), the value will be extremely large ( i.e. over 5000).

Resolution - For either operating system, the JobProcessor.properties setting, dlautopublish.jobs.before.restart should be set lower (suggested value is 200). This will clean up some of the resources that DLAutopublish.exe stores. For Windows 2000 only, a registry setting exists that can be set to restart the print spooler after so many jobs so it can release resources.

      values: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Net-It Software Corp.\Net-It Central\DocProps
      Value: RestartSpooleronNDocs to 100 (64hex)
      Value: KeepPrintingAppOpen to 1
      Value: CleanDDEonNDocs to 100 (64hex) or 0

    PROPERTY MANAGER

    • Setting a custom title or changing sort order in Property Manager will override the setting for that file or folder in a  _NameMap.txt  file.

    • You can expand all subfolders in the tree view of the Property Manager tab by holding down the Ctrl key while expanding a folder (clicking on the + icon).
Note: If expanding the subfolders takes a while, you need to continue holding the Ctrl key down until the wait cursor is gone.

    • Any file without an extension, and any file whose extension is in the Exclude Filter, is grayed out in Property Manager.

    RUNNING AS A SERVICE

    • Net-It Central can be scheduled to run as a Windows service. To enable Net-It Central to run as a service, select the checkbox Enable Net-It Central Service in the Service Options dialog box.

    • The service can be stopped (disabled) by deselecting the Enable Net-It Central Service checkbox in the Schedule Builds from Service dialog box. When you stop the service, you will also be given the option to uninstall the service.

    • Net-It Central service needs to run under a valid user account (Username/Password) with Administrator privileges. A separate "Central" user account should be created for this purpose with a non-expiring password. The "Central" account also needs domain access privileges if network drives will be used for the source or destination locations. The Net-It Central service can not be run using the System Account.

    • Before scheduling Net-It Central to run as a service, you need to log into Windows using the "Central" account interactively and perform a manual build with Central to ensure that all account privileges and preferences for other applications are set appropriately. The manual build should include a document of each type that will be used to ensure that all applications are set up correctly. See the note on Microsoft Office.

    • After scheduling Net-It Central to run as a service, you can verify that the service installed properly by going to the "Services" control panel and looking for a service named "Net-It Central" in the services name column. Double clicking on the entry will display the properties of the service.

    • During normal operation, you should not use the Services control panel to Start, Stop, Pause or Continue the Net-It Central service. Any scheduling changes must be made through the Net-It Central application.

    • Starting the Net-It Central application will pause the service.

    • If Net-It Central is being run as a service, the file endbuild.bat needs to be placed in the system path (e.g., \WINDOWS\System32). When a buildall completes,  endbuild.bat is run allowing the site administrator to do extra processing when a site build is complete, For example, a site administrator can implement the necessary batch commands to email the errorlog.txt file when a build error occurs.

    • If you wish to change the user account the service is registered for, you can do this by first disabling and uninstalling the service as described above; then reopen the Schedule Builds for Service dialog box in Net-It Central and enable the checkbox again.

    • Net-It Central service events can be viewed using Windows Event Viewer application.

    • Due to Windows standard behavior, source and upload locations on a network volume must use UNC addressing and not a mapped drive when running Net-It Central as a service (e.g. \\Myserver\Shared\MyFolder versus F:\MyFolder, where F: is mapped to \\Myserver\Shared).

SEARCH
  • Issue: When viewing the search results, the logo banner images do not display and instead there is a little red x.

Resolution: The scripts directory in IIS does not have read permissions. To fix this, open the IIS Management Console. Locate and right click on the Scripts directory. Select Properties from the pop-up menu. Click on the Virtual Directory tab make sure the Read option is checked.

LIMITATIONS

  • When a site is built with a template that does not use thumbnails, and you switch to a template that uses thumbnails, the site must be manually rebuilt to generate thumbnails for the existing files.

  • If you switch from another template to the Side by Side, Thumbnails template, you must do a Rebuild All to have the JPGs created.

  • If you are using the Side by Side, Thumbnails template and you make changes such that the templates are rebuilt (e.g., change the template files or change any settings in Net-It Central like the site title that cause just the template to rebuild), the JPG files in the site are deleted.  The site would need to be rebuilt.

  • If you build a site using the Side by Side, Thumbnails template, there must be a valid site URL entered in the Locations tab of the Site Properties dialog box.

  • For certain text-oriented formats (*.cal, *.cgm, *.906, *.907, and *.plt), the original document appears as a text file in the browser instead of being downloaded when the "Download Original Document" button is clicked.  Either invoke the browser's "File/ Save As" function to save these documents, or implement the inline JavaScript method discussed below to allow right-click functionality to "Save Target As".
